Cyprus 5-coin Mint Set 1963-1983

Cyprus 5-coin Mint Set 1963-1983

In 1963 Cyprus issued its first coinage after gaining independence only three years earlier. Before that in 1955, the British colonial authorities decimalised the island’s currency using the “pound-mil” system whereby the pound was subdivided into 1,000 mils. It was not until 1983 that the subdivision was changed to 100 cents to the pound. We can now offer a full set of these post-independence coins showing the name of the country in both Greek and Turkish.

France, 3 Coin Set 1916 Extremely Fine

France, 3 Coin Set 1916 Extremely Fine

From the late 1800s until about 1920 the French issued a beautiful set of coins 1/2 Franc to the 2 Francs. It had a woman sowing grain and we guess was based on the paintings of Millet. We've managed to put together date sets of the three silver denominations, Half Franc, One Franc, and Two Francs. This set is dated 1916. All sets contain matching dates and the coins are in Extremely Fine or better condition. They are still toned, as we have not touched them. But we do believe these are some of the most attractive coins that France has issued in modern times. Supplies are extremely limited and we think they are beautiful.

France Post-War Aluminium 3 Coin Set

France, Post-War Aluminium 3 Coin Set

These 1, 2 and 5 franc aluminium coins began circulating in newly liberated France in 1945 to replace the ones introduced by the Vichy Regime. Their introduction meant a return of the Republican motto “Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité” (Liberty, Equality, Fraternity) instead of “Travail, Famille, Patrie” (Work, Family, Fatherland) that was brought in under the Occupation. Originally the US planned to introduce its own occupation currency, but the move was blocked by General Charles de Gaulle who saw it as nothing more than “counterfeit money”.

France_Set_of_4_high_denomination_old_Francs

France, Set of 4 high denomination old Francs

In the wake of the Second World War high levels of inflation in France led to the withdrawal from circulation of all denominations below 1 franc. By 1950 the larger copper-nickel 10 franc coin had to be replaced by a much smaller one in aluminium bronze, along with 20 and 50 franc coins also struck in aluminium bronze. In 1954 a copper-nickel 100 franc coin was also introduced. We can now offer a set of these four high-denomination coins that circulated until the introduction of the new franc in 1960.
