Romania, Ice Hockey Copper Piedfort

Recently we have been getting a number of enquirers from Romania and several other former Eastern European countries for the Romanian pattern Crowns that we had so many of. Strange, when we went to check our inventory we discovered that the large group we had was almost sold out. After all they are very low mintage, they are Olympic commemoratives and they are priced cheaply. We did find one piece that we had in a smallish quantity and that we can offer to you at a reasonable price. It is Pattern Crown struck for the Ice Hockey event held in Nagano, Japan. It was struck in copper proof, double thickness or Piedfort and with a mintage of just 125 pieces. Get them before the Romanian dealers buy them all up.

Romania, Olympic Ice Skaters

This handsome Silver Proof crown or 100 Lei was issued by Romania for the Winter Olympics held in Nagano Japan in 1998. It was the 18th Winter Olympics. The crown depicts a man and a woman ice dancing, with date and number of the Olympiad on one side. The other side has the Olympic flame and the arms of Romania. Each Sterling Silver Proof 100 Lei comes in a protective capsule and is gleaming Proof condition. We believe it to be a relatively low mintage coin, as the Winter Olympics do not have as much interest as the Summer Olympics. As some mints are charging up to £88 for a silver proof crown, our price for this coin is most reasonable.

Romania, Pattern Equestrian Olympics Copper Piedfort

One of the oldest mints in the world, the Romanian Mint made patterns for crowns they were going to issue for the Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, United States and Nagano, Japan. They were never issued and thus only the patterns exist. The mintage was only 125 pieces in each metal and size (i.e. single thickness or piedfort). So they are some of the RAREST Olympic coins around. We bought quite a lot of the mintage, but over the years we have sold out of many of them.

Picture of Romanian Basketball Copper Piedfort

Romanian Basketball Copper Piedfort

This pattern Crown was issued by the Romanian Mint for the Olympics held in Atlanta, Georgia in 1996. What is most fascinating is the mintage, Just 125 pieces were ever made. This makes it one of the lowest mintage and scarcest Olympic coins ever made. It honours the Olympic sport of basketball. It shows two players jumping for a ball. The other side has the arms of Romania and the date 1996. This piece is struck in copper, but it is double the normal thickness or a piedfort. A piedfort crown is a rather large coin and it is in proof condition. We bought a large proportion of the mintage and over the years they are starting to run out. Especially now that we are getting interest from the former Soviet countries. The people have money and want to collect their own coinage. Remember there were only 125 pieces ever made in copper piedfort.
