Hansatsu or Japanese Bookmark Money was a form of currency used by private merchants until the latter years of the nineteenth century. Printed in black on thin cream card, these notes are a fascinating part of Japanese numismatic history. It got its nickname of bookmark money because that is the shape they ressemble.
