Tristan da Cunha, Captain James Cook Proof Crown In Capsule

Captain James Cook on his three voyages to the South Pacific, mapped all of New Zealand, much of the East Coast of Australia, found the Sandwich Islands and South Georgia. He was also the first European to begin formal contact with the Hawaii Islands. This was unfortunate, as when he returned there, there was a terrible fight and he was killed in 1779. This handsome silver plated diamond shaped coin from Tristan da Cunha honours this great explorer. You have Captain James Cook on one side with his sailing ship and a ships wheel behind him. The other side has H.M. the Queen. Each large sized diamond shaped crown comes in a unique heavy plastic capsule to protect the proof surface. A great man and a wonderful coin, what more could you ask for?

In 2015 the little island of Tristan da Cunha issued a rather special Silver Proof Crown. It was for Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson, his portrait was the reverse with H. M. Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. But what makes these crowns so special is that each coin contains an actual piece of his flagship HMS Victory. That’s right a small actual piece of the wood that was used in his ship... You can now own a real bit of history. Today the mints worldwide seem to be charging about £80.00 for a new silver crown, so we are very pleased to be able to offer you one at a lower price. Magellan would prove himself to be a competent sailor and soldier while serving the Portuguese army in India for eight years. Magellan defected to Spain in 1519 and, with the Spanish King's blessing set out to search for a passage to the Spice Islands (Moluccas) and achieve what Columbus never could: circumnavigate the world! In 1521 he went around South America and found the passage to the Spice Islands, but was unfortunately killed in present-day Philippines. However, on 06 September 1522, Elcano and the remaining crew of the voyage (18 out of 240) completed the journey and became the first men to circle the world.

Turkey, Anatolia, Kaykhusraw II, Dirham Lion & Sun Type Good Very Fine_obv

Turkey, Anatolia, Kaykhusraw II, Dirham (Lion & Sun Type - Seljuq sultans of Rum) Good Very Fine

Ghiyath al-Din Kaykhusraw II was the sultan of the Seljuqs of Rûm from 1237 until his death in 1246. He ruled at the time of the Babai uprising and the Mongol invasion of Anatolia. He led the Seljuq army with its Christian allies at the Battle of Köse Dağ in 1243 and was the last of the Seljuq sultans to wield any significant power, he died a vassal of the Mongols. Between ca. 1240–1243 a series of remarkable silver dirhams were struck in Kaykhusraw’s name depicting a lion and sun. Generally, Islamic traditions forbid representations of living things so it is very unusual to find such iconography on Islamic coins. Several explanations of the lion and sun have been offered to suggest that the images represent the constellation Leo, the astrological sign of Kaykhusraw’s beloved Georgian wife Tamar or that the lion represents Kaykhusraw and the sun Tamar. Grading Good Very Fine, these are beautiful silver coins struck around 780 years ago. Limited availability and the first time we have offered these coins.
