Thailand, 19th Century Thai Silver Bullet Money

Thailand, 19th Century Thai Silver Bullet Money

Bullet money or bullet coins, known in Thai as photduang, were a type of coinage historically used in Siam (now Thailand) and its predecessor kingdoms. They were almost exclusively made of silver, in the form of a bar bent into a roundish shape, and stamped with certain marks. They were issued according to the baht system of weights, known among Westerners as the tical, which is the basis of the modern Thai currency. Their earliest use dates from 13th-15th centuries but were used up until 1904 when their use was discontinued in favour of flat coinage. These examples date from the 19th century and are 1 Tical pieces.

We have a small number of the crown-sized 1 pa’anga coin issued in 1967 to commemorate the famous queen just 2 years after her death, all in uncirculated condition.

trans-dniester-set-of-4-special-coins-2014-obv

TransDniester Republic, set of 4 coins

The autonomous region called the TransDniester Republic issued a most unusual set of coins in 2014. They are made of composite material, are semi-transparent, and have a textured surface. This territory was part of the Soviet Union, and later became an unrecognised Moldovan breakaway state, that is still recognised internationally as being part of Moldova. These coins are a plastic-type material but with a hardness that produces a stone-like sound when rubbed. They were issued by the 'TransDniester Republic Bank' and there are 4 denominations. 1 Rouble circular, 3 Roubles square with rounded corners, 5 Roubles pentagon-shaped with rounded corners, and 10 Roubles hexagonal with rounded corners. They have rounded corners for ease of use and for ease of machine readability at high speeds. These were an experiment and who knows if they will continue to issue them. But we thought that they were very interesting and rather well priced so we obtained 100 sets of them. Supplies are limited.
