The reverse carried through from the Edward VII farthing. The principal difference from the halfpenny and penny was that the 'modified effigy' introduced in 1926 continued through to 1936 instead of being replaced by a smaller version in 1928.

The new reverse, also introduced in 1926, was a reduced version of that used on the penny and halfpenny from 1927 amd 1925 respectively.

Ghosting does not occur as frequently on the farthing as it does on the two larger bronze coins, and disappears with the new 1926 issue.

The farthing continued to be issued in an artificially toned state to avoid confusion with the half sovereign until 1917. Half sovereigns were by that time no longer being struck at the mint.

These 1918 Farthings struck in the last year of WW1, the first farthings that were not artificially toned are not common and are in Uncirculated to Brilliant Uncirculated condition. Nevertheless, several varieties of hammered shilling were also produced in the 1560s. All issues show a bust of the queen on the obverse and the royal shield over a cross on the reverse; they are undated and have no mark of value. However, they cannot be confused with other issues, because no other denomination is at all like the shilling in style and, most importantly, size. All issues have a mintmark on the obverse and reverse, found at the top of the coin at the beginning of the legends. And, since mintmarks were a form of quality control linking coins with dies, all Elizabeth I shillings can be dated very accurately with the help of the mints' records and historical data.

The seventh issue is fairly easy to obtain, especially in VG to Fine condition; VF and EF examples exist but are quite rare. The coins are rarely found clipped or damaged and collectors should try to obtain one with a reasonable portrait and clear mintmark. If you're thinking about collecting the series, you can start almost at the end with this seventh issue Shilling with '1' mintmark. The new minor silver coinage was not universally popular. Pepys records in his diary for 23 November 1663 that the financier Blackwell found it ‘deadly inconvenient for telling, it is so thick and the edges are made to turn up’. The issue of halfcrowns continued for over twenty years, broken only in 1665 during the Great Plague, and used a design which continued throughout the reign with only minor modifications. It is believed that the ravages of the plague were also responsible for the low issue of halfcrowns up to 1664 and possibly other dates.

Provenance marks used in the series are: elephant and castle (or elephant) denoting silver from the Africa Company; plume for silver Welsh mines.

Although a prolific issue spanning almost a quarter of a century, the halfcrowns were well circulated and few survive in near-perfect condition. A good fine condition specimen is, however, still an attractive coin, and many collectors will content themselves with such a piece to represent each date or type.

There are a number of interesting varieties and is prudent to examine all aspects of a coin, including the edge, when contemplating a purchase. Specimens of 1670 should always be checked for the MRG reverse, as this coin does turn up occasionally. Very fine or better specimens of this series required by serious collectors are comparatively expensive owing to their scarcity and the high demand for them. These were not released. The coins bore the obverse portrait of Elizabeth II by Mary Gillick, and the Pistrucci St George and dragon reverse.

The production of sovereigns was resumed in 1957. The portrait was similar to the 1953 piece but the obverse legend was revised. The coin was struck for most of the years up to 1968, then resumed in 1974 (post-decimalization) using an older portrait by Arnold Machin. From 1979 many proofs were struck for inclusion in proof sets and as individually cased proofs. In 1985 a new portrait by Raphael David Maklouf was introduced. The reverse uses the Pistrucci St George and dragon design throughout, except for 1989 when a proof sovereign was struck for the 500th anniversary of the sovereign and 2022 in celebration of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. Both coins had a completely new obverse and reverse.

This series normally occurs in Extremely Fine or mint state. Forgeries exist of the non-proof coins. We still have available examples of the 1957 sovereign in BU, the first sovereign made for H.M. Queen Elizabeth II. All James I’s issues are undated and have the bust of the king with the denomination behind on the obverse and the royal arms on the reverse. The various issues can be distinguished by the reverse legend, the mintmark at the beginning of the obverse and reverse legends, as well as by the style of the bust. However, should the bust be difficult to identify, some mintmarks are specific to particular issues and may be used to identify a coin. One scarce issue also has a large plume above the reverse shield. It should be noted that several Scottish issues, produced during the reigns of James VI and Charles I, are fairly similar to James I’s English shillings, except for differences in the royal shield and, sometimes, the legends. However, should a coin have a large harp on the reverse only, it is an Irish issue.

Most James I shillings are fairly common and usually found in less than Fine condition, often with a very worn portrait. Although collectors should have little difficulty obtaining an example in Fine or VF. EF specimens are rare and desirable, Shillings are rarely clipped but often found with deliberate scratches on them for which there does not seem to be a plausible explanation, but may be done by anti-royalists. Because of the quality of the strike, the reverse of the coin is usually in better condition than the obverse. Have a closer look at this example in Very Fine with no scratches below.

SEE OTHER COINS FROM JAMES I REIGN

Follow us on Instagram and Facebook and be one of the first collectors to read our tips.

urn:store:1:blog:post:50https://coincraft.com/coin-collecting-tips-george-iii-1760-1820-sixpenceCoin Collecting Tips: George III (1760-1820) Sixpence
With the Great Recoinage of 1816, the sixpence series was resumed. It featured a new design very similar to that of the shilling. The initial design for the obverse was by Benedetto Pistrucci and engraved by Thomas Wyon, junior (1792-1817). The reverse was both designed and engraved by Thomas Wyon, junior. After the latter’s untimely death in 1817, engraving work was carried out by Pistruci himself, but under the prevailing legislation foreigners were debarred from holding the position of Chief Engraver. The craftsmanship and quality of striking of this series was extremely good, and specimens in the higher grades frequently exhibit a prooflike appearance.

The sixpences of 1816 and later remained legal tender even after decimalisation in 1971, the coin was later demonetized despite some degree of public opinion which wanted to retain a denomination of 2 ½ (decimal) pence.

The sixpences of George III should be collected in extremely fine or better condition. In these grades the excellent quality of the workmanship will be best appreciated. The coin presented here is the first of the new currency, its condition is Gem Uncirculated and it has a fantastic toning... A beauty!

PURCHASE THIS 1816 BULL HEAD SIXPENCE IN GEM UNC TO YOUR COLLECTION

SEE OTHER BULL HEAD SIXPENCES

Follow us on Instagram and Facebook and be one of the first collectors to read our tips.
urn:store:1:blog:post:51https://coincraft.com/coin-collecting-tips-edward-iv-groat-second-reign-1471-1483Coin Collecting Tips: Edward IV Groat (second Reign 1471-1483)
The groats from Edward IV’s second reign are very similar to the first reign light coinage issues, which is hardly surprising as the two periods were only seven months apart. In identifying a second reign groat, collectors should check firstly, that the mint on the reverse inner circle reads CIVITAS LONDON for London, VILLA BRISTOW (varieties) for Bristol or CIVITAS EBORACI for York. Secondly, any marks, such as pellets or roses, correspond to those listed under the various classes, And thirdly, the mintmark found above the king’s head on the obverse and at the beginning of the outer circle legend on the reverse, ties in with the appropriate class. However, in some cases dies were muled so a different mintmark appears on each side of the coin; this situation is not uncommon for coins from this period.

Most of these issues are fairly common and coins are usually found in Fine condition although VF and EF examples are not uncommon. Most coins tend to be unclipped. Such is the case of this Groat from the London Mint offered in About Very Fine.

SEE MORE GROATS

Follow us on Instagram and Facebook and be one of the first collectors to read our tips.
urn:store:1:blog:post:49https://coincraft.com/coin-collecting-tips-edward-vii-1901-1910-crownsCoin Collecting Tips: Edward VII (1901-1910) Crowns
The king’s portrait on the one-year type crowns of Edward VII was designed by George William de Saulles (1862-1903), while the reverse retained the Pistrucci St George and dragon. An interesting comment on the engraver appears in The Times of 26 January 1902: ‘Contrary to some unauthorised rumours, Mr de Saulles is not a foreigner. He is an Englishman, born of English parents in Birmingham.’

Unlike on previous crowns, only one regnal date was used on the whole of the issue for the calendar year. A collector should look to obtain Mint sate or near for the ordinary issue, and FDC for the matt proof. Condition is critical in the case of the proof, as the original mat surface is impaired with even a trace of wear. To the untrained eye, a slightly impaired coin can appear perfect, and a beginner should take any opportunity of inspecting a set of FDC matt proofs, if the occasion arises. Have look at this example on our website.

Follow us on Instagram and Facebook and be one of the first collectors to read our tips.
urn:store:1:blog:post:48https://coincraft.com/george-v-1910-1936-sixpenceCoin Collecting Tips: George V (1910-1936) Sixpence
The obverse of the George V sixpence used the portrait of George V by Sir Bertram Mackennal (1863-1931) engraved using the mechanical reduction machine to the appropriate size. The reverse finally discarded the Merlen reverse first used in 1831. Ironically, however, the lion on crown design which replaced it was last used on sixpences in 1829! This modified version was almost identical to that designed by de Saulles for the Edward VII shilling and carried forward to the George V shilling.

In line with the other silver denominations, the silver content of the metal was reduced to 50% in 1920, and further modified in 1922 after it was found that streaking occurred. Another modification to the metal content was made in 1927 when the new acorn reverse was introduced. This design, depicting six acorns (presumably indicating six pence) amongst oak leaves, was one of a number of new designs for coinage by George Kruger Gray (1880-1943) and was sometimes referred to somewhat unkindly as ‘the garden of weeds’. The new designs were introduced to the public in 1927 by way of proof set of six silver coins and were all abandoned in 1937 on the advent of the George VI coinage.

This series should be collected in Extremely Fine to Mint State, although some of the dates are quite difficult to obtain in this condition. The acorn reverse type sixpence of 1928-36 often turns up cleaned or polished, sometimes to such an extent that it appears lacquered. Care should be taken in grading this coin, with special attention being paid to the detail on the base of each of the six acorns. Have a closer look at this coin below.

PURCHASE THIS CHOICE BU 1936 SIXPENCE

SEE OTHER GEORGE V SIXPENCES

Follow us on Instagram and Facebook and be one of the first collectors to read our tips.

urn:store:1:blog:post:47https://coincraft.com/coin-collectorsCoin Collectors — what’s a coin collector and why should you collect coins?
A coin collector is called a numismatist or numismatologist, although these terms can also be applied to coin dealers, and scholars. Many coin dealers, including our founder Richard Lobel and our coin specialists, started out as coin collectors before they became dealers. Numismatist or numismatologist serve as umbrella terms for all of those that have numismatic items as a source of income and/or as a hobby.

The collector plays an important part in the study of coins in that he/she at least preserves the coins for future students to examine. A collector does not really own his/her treasure he or she is a custodian for future generations.

Now that you know what the formal name given to a coin collector is, perhaps you might be wondering if coin collecting is for you.

Here’s the answer: if you have no interest in history, or feel no sense of awe in handling items which have passed through countless hands for hundreds of years, then it may be that collecting coins is not for you.

Even so, you may still wish to acquire a collection or accumulation of coins for investment purposes. There are few investment choices which are as easily marketable or transportable as coins.

We at Coincraft – Britain’s Coin Shop do not sell coins as an investment. And that’s because there is no logical reason why items bought to bring pleasure should increase in value. If one’s interests lie with tech devices one does not expect to sell the used equipment for a profit at a later date.

However, if one acquires collectible items for pleasure, it will often be the case that they increase in value at a rate higher than inflation over the years. Such appreciation in value should be regarded as a bonus on top of the enjoyment that one gets from their possession, and not as a right.

After all, who can predict what is going to happen in the future? While it’s true that collectors who have stayed the course and have collected during the times when prices were high and when prices were low, have done very nicely when they sold their collections. They were able to accomplish this because they enjoyed collecting and learning about the coins in their collections.

But if you are one of those able to enjoy the myriad of experiences which coins offer, you are indeed lucky. How else could you acquire, at little cost an item bearing a two thousand years old representation of a Roman Emperor? What other field could tantalise as one tries to fathom the minds of designers and engravers, such as those who encoded information into the minute die variations of the harp strings of the coinage of Charles II? Certainly, stamps do not offer anywhere near the same mystery; oil paintings, if one can afford them, possibility do, but they do not fit nearly so easily into registered envelopes.

Getting started in coin collecting – what coins should I collect?

What coins to start collecting will depend on what sort of person you are. Primarily, it is best to collect what attracts you most. However, you should remember that there are alternatives to the obvious answer of collecting a particular denomination by date or by type. For example, you can take a totally original approach, choosing to collect Victorian English silver coins by die number from 1 up to several hundred.

What you collect will usually reflect something of your inner nature. An extrovert who wants to show off a collection will often collect crowns or five guinea pieces. An intellectual might collect, and study at length, Victorian farthings by date and die variety. Someone with an interest in ancient history might want to start a Roman bronze coin collection, and have a coin for every Emperor. Or even a British coin collection with coins linked to historic events.

Collectors can confine themselves to a simple method of collecting, such as acquiring one coin of each British monarch – or can delve deeply into the types of coin, reasons for issue, the engravers and the multitude of factors involved in the process of putting a penny in your pocket. Whatever the path you decide to travel with your collection, remember that the best rule is to do your own thing.

However, if you want some ideas on where to start a coin collection, have a look at the suggestions below.

Interested in Ancient History

Alexander the Great Silver Drachm

Constantine London Treasure

Greek Dolphin Money from Olibia

Roman Emperors

Starter Collection

Septimus Severus Silver Denarius

Byzantine Coin of Christ Fine

Interested in British History

<img style="display: block; You will need to have at least some knowledge of what he/she collects and what coins does he/she already have on his/her collection. So unless you ask them directly what coin they wish to add to their collection, your chances of buying the right gift are fairly slim. Even if they do tell you what coins are missing in their collection, you might find that there is a reason why they are still missing. It could be because they rare and therefore difficult to find, or it could be that the coin they want is very sought after, having a market price that’s above your budget for a gift.

What you can buy, that most collectors will appreciate, since most of them are always in need, are supplies. Give them a nice coin album and encourage them to continue building their collection, or a better magnifier, so that they can better investigate their favourite coins.

If you know what and how they collect, it might be a good idea to offer them a book. Have a look at our book category page and see if there are any books they might find interesting based on the coins they collect.

Another solution might be to let them decide for themselves which coins they want in their collection, but at the sametime show them that you know that coin collecting is important to them. You can present them with a thoughtful gift by offering one of our Virtual Gift Cards.

Of course, if they have just recently started collecting coins the suggestions above might be a good starting point.
urn:store:1:blog:post:46https://coincraft.com/coin-collecting-tips-anne-1701-1714-farthingCoin Collecting Tips: Anne 1714 Farthing
The 1714 farthing of Anne is the only copper coin which is generally thought of as a regular coin. In fact, its status is in some doubt. The reign was characterised by a large number of patterns of varying designs and metals. If Anne had not died in 1714, no doubt the farthing would have entered circulation in quantity, but its actual legal status may well be that of a pattern. However, it is widely accepted and catalogued as a coin.

Copper coinage of Anne was not considered necessary because a very large quantity of copper had been struck during the previous reign, much of it of poor quality. Isacc Newton was the Master of the Mint at this time, and he had high ideals about the quality of the coinage. The Anne farthing is certainly greatly superior to the pieces of William III, not only in striking but also in design. The old Britannia figure used since the days of Charles II was discarded in favour of a sharper high relief design by John Croker, who also designed the obverse portrait of Anne. The bare leg on the figure of Britannia as on earlier coins is thought to have been covered on the 1714 coin on the orders of the queen.

As the Anne farthing did not enter circulation to any great extent, the coin is probably scarcer in fine condition than in extremely fine, although many low grade specimens do turn up. An extremely fine or better specimen is the obvious candidate for any collection.

Many cast and other forgeries exist, and one must be on guard. Electrotypes are deceptive, and the edge should be examined; these pieces are made in two halves and the seam is usually evident.

SEE OTHER RARE MILLED COINS

Follow us on Instagram and Facebook and be one of the first collectors to read our tips.
urn:store:1:blog:post:45https://coincraft.com/coin-collecting-tips-charles-ii-shillingCoin Collecting Tips: Charles II Shilling
The series is a very difficult to one to collect exhaustively, many of the date/head/silver-provenance combinations being very rare in any condition; in addition the rarity of even common pieces of Charles II coinage in very fine or better condition render the acquisition of a comprehensive collection a very difficult task. One should be perhaps thankful that the edges were milled rather than bearing regnal years with their attendant errors and varieties.

For a series of such complexity, one should attempt to acquire varieties in any condition; rejection of a rare piece purely on grounds of condition may result in a gap in one’s collection which proves permanent.

We have available a 1663 Shilling in Extremely Fine, Prooflike and with a beautiful toning for sale. The axis alignment reverted to that used on pre-George III coinage. The young head was designed by John Croker, while the old head was probably produced by Johann Sigismund Tanner, who had joined the Mint as an apprentice around 1728.

Provenance marks are: plumes (silver from the Welsh copper Company), roses (silver from the mines in the West of England), roses and plumes (silver from the ‘Company for smelting down lead with Pitcoale and Seacole’), all of these in the reverse angles, LIMA below the head for coins struck in silver captured by Admiral Anson in Peru during this voyage.

The young head sixpences should be collected in at least very fine condition. The short and eventful reign of James II was marked by a brief series of coinage spanning just three dates, with no rare varieties and no proofs or patterns.

Assembling a set of James II crowns in fine condition, either by date and variety or by type, should present only moderate difficulty, however, some of the varieties are quite rare in very fine or better. Many of the crowns of this series are weakly struck, especially at the top of the wreath on the obverse and at the date.

Consequently, very fine specimens may appear to be in a lower grade than they actually are. Adjustments marks are often seen on James II crowns. These marks appear similar to scratches and were caused by filing the coins before issue to ensure that the weight was correct.

This 1688/7 Crown with Quarto edge in About Very Fine/Very Fine is a scarce over date. All issues are hammered, with the later ones often being poorly struck on flans of irregular size so perhaps not all of the legend will be clear.

Collectors should try to obtain an example with a clear king on horseback, a clear mintmark, and as much of the legend as possible. Many of these issues have been found in large hoards, often buried during the English Civil War.

They are usually available in VG to VF condition and, although EF examples exist, coins often left the mint in only VF condition. Moreover, many are found clipped, some coins are found with what looks like deliberate nasty scratches and while the reason for this remains open to speculation, it could well have been the work of a contemporary ardent anti-royalist.

This is an outstanding example so much of the fine details show and are clear that owning it will be a real treat!

PURCHASE THIS TOWER MINT CROWN

SEE OTHER RARE HAMMERED COINS

Follow us on Instagram and Facebook and be one of the first collectors to read our tips.
urn:store:1:blog:post:40https://coincraft.com/coin-collecting-tips-william-mary-1688-1694-halfcrownsCoin Collecting Tips: William & Mary (1688 – 1694) Halfcrowns
Only the most avid collector of varieties will attempt to assemble a set of the minor variations of the crown on the reverse of the 1689 Halfcrown, but this coin should always be checked for the very striking L over M type and for the 'FRA' reverse, both scarce.

Similarly, the 1690, in itself a particularly scarce date, must always be examined for the major 'GRETIA' variety.

The later type of 1691-93 is struck in very low relief and a very fine or extremely fine specimen may appear as fine or very fine to the untrained eye. The game’s origins date back to Tudor times or perhaps even earlier as an earlier incarnation of the game existed in the fifteenth century during the reign of Edward IV. Back then it was called shoffe-grote (because the coins used were groats). King Henry VIII allegedly lost large sums of money playing shove ha'penny, some say this happened because the king had a drinking problem...

How to play shove Ha'penny

Players shove five Ha'pennies coins up the board, one at a time. The board in which the game is played has 9 beds marked, as well as a vertical line on each side. Each player will have a turn in sliding their 5 coins up the board with the aim of getting the coins in a bed to score.

Before shoving the coin the player has to position the coin at the front of the board with the rear of the coin just sticking over the edge of the board. Any part of the hand can be used to strike the coin.

If a coin struck does not reach the first line of the board, the coin can be shoved again and it will not count as having been played. Coins crossing the side rails will not be valid for scoring. Points scored will be marked with chalk marks at the end or at the edge of the board: one player on the right and the other on the left.

Once a player has a total of 3 for a bed (between two horizontal lines), that bed is considered filled. Once the three scores have been made in a bed the next scores on that bed will have to be given to the opposition (unless doing so would cause a win).

The aim is to get three chalk marks in each of the squares – three scores in each of the nine beds. The winner is the first to fill all beds.

Shove ha'penny board

To play a game of Shove ha'penny you'll need a small, rectangular, smooth board usually made of wood or stone. You need a wooden board but almost any flat piece of wood will do. We don’t have them available for sale at the moment, but you can buy the ha’pennies and see if you can improvise with a homemade shove ha’penny board! Whatever you do, have fun trying!

Shove Ha'penny coins (for Sale)

To play Shove Halfpenny the first thing you need are 10 of the old pre-decimal Halfpennies, five for each player.

In our opinion (and of course, we are biased), coins are the most important thing. And if you’re going to buy coins, how about getting some with history, but in Brilliant Uncirculated condition (a coin that has never been circulated retaining all of its original mint lustre)?

We have available a Shove Halfpenny Coin Mini Bag. You get a nice bag holding 10 1967 (the last year of issue) Halfpennies in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. Five coins for each player. The Germanic leader, Arminius, organised a series of ambushes on a column of three Roman legions headed by Publius Quinctilius Varus.

The story of Arminius is a curious one, he was taken as a hostage by the Romans while still a child, and at an early age was drafted into the Roman military. He later became a citizen of Rome and a Roman Knight, an Eques. Arminius was instrumental in the defeat of the Roman Empire at the hands of the Germanic tribes, as he originally was sent to aid Varus, but instead secretly plotted the Germanic revolt.

Diameter: 19.80 mm approx.

This Augustus silver Denarius is toned a wonderful red from an old velvet coin case. ("Quintilius Varus, give me back my legions!" Though some people translate Legion as Eagle).

This battle halted the period of triumphant Roman expansion under Augustus. His stepson Tiberius (later emperor himself) took the Legions II Augusta, XX Valeria Victrix, and XIII Gemina to the Rhine to replace the lost legions. He campaigned in Germany from A.D. 10-12 for vengeance rather than conquest.

Diameter: 25.00 mm approx.

This Tiberius bronze As is in a superior grade for these types and is from the rare altar of Lugdunum series. According to them, it prevented the Romanization of the Germanic tribes east of the Rhine. For this reason, many also consider this battle a turning point in history.

If you would like to start a roman coin collection, but don't know where to begin, our Roman Emperors Starter Collection provides a good starting point - I hope you like it.

If you have a minute, have a look at my most recent ancient coin picks. I think it's also worth pointing out that I only have one of each coin available...

urn:store:1:blog:post:18https://coincraft.com/on-this-day-20th-novemberOn This Day... 20th November
Coincraft's 'Telling History with Money'

In this feature, we look back at historical events that have occurred on this date.

On this day, 20th of November 1947 Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor (then Princess Elizabeth) married Philip Mountbatten (then Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark). They first met when Elizabeth was only 13, It is believed that Lord Louis Mountbatten (Philip's uncle) first introduced Elizabeth to Philip while the royals toured Dartmouth Royal Naval College. Elizabeth was immediately smitten by an 18-year-old Philip and the pair kept in touch throughout the years, eventually falling in love.

Fun fact: like many royal couples the two are cousins, second cousins once removed by descent from Christian IX of Denmark and Louise of Hesse-Kassel, and third cousins by descent from Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.

1947 Date Set

Elizabeth and Philip's romance started when the two were introduced at Dartmouth Royal Naval College in 1939, the pair corresponded during World War II but it wasn't until the war was over in 1946, that Philip proposed. Elizabeth agreed almost immediately without seeking permission from her parents, who were at first sceptical of the Prince.

World War II Set

King George VI had doubts about the match, although he knew that Philip descended from royal blood on both sides, he was also aware that Prince Philip had a history of instability. The Prince's father had abandoned the family to live with a mistress, and his mother had been committed to a mental hospital with schizophrenia. Philip was left from a young age at the mercy of his most wealthy relatives, lacking both financial independence and emotional stability. The then Prince of Greece and Denmark was seen by courtiers as poor, foreign, and missing proper deference to the British royal family.

The wedding would go ahead despite all the obstacles, not even the rationing introduced by the government during and shortly after the Second World War would stop Elizabeth from marrying the man she loved. Due to the rationing of scarce resources, the Queen would have to purchase the material for her wedding dress using ration coupons. The dress was designed by Court Designer Norman Hartnell using ivory silk and a diamond fringe tiara secured her veil. The Queen's dress was decorated with crystals and 10,000 seed pearls, imported from the United States of America.

Gibraltar / Jersey (Wedding Dress) Crown Cover

We hope you enjoyed our rather long blog post and we look forward to your next visit, until then...

Stay well, be happy and keep on collecting.

urn:store:1:blog:post:15https://coincraft.com/on-this-day-05th-november-2019On This Day... 5th November 2019
Coincraft's 'Telling History with Money'

In this feature, we look back at historical events that have occurred on this date.

Updated on 05 November 2020

Today we remember the 5th of November’s Gunpowder Plot, the attempt to blow up the House of Lords and assassinate King James I. Thanks to recent mentions in popular culture, most notably in the film V for Vendetta and after the adoption of the Guy Fawkes mask by hacker group ‘Anonymous’, the 5 November is now perhaps one of the most well-known events in British history. A lot has been said and written about the Gunpowder plot and we feel that it would be redundant to retell the events that occurred on that night. Instead, we would like to tell you the story of the reign of the first Stuart King with coins, and present you with some fun facts about the King that Robert Catesby, Guy Fawkes, and others tried to replace from the throne.

James I was King of Scotland before becoming King of England

Before he was crowned King James I of England he was King James IV of Scotland. He became King of Scotland on July 29, 1567, at thirteen months, by then he was already an orphan, his father (Henry Stuart) had been murdered on the 10 February that year and his mother had been forced to abdicate the throne. James had been ruling Scotland for thirty-seven years before becoming King of England in 1603.

He sponsored an English translation of the Bible

From 1604 to 1611 King James I sponsored an English version of the bible that later became known as the Authorised King James Version. This version of the bible was published in 1611.

The 2nd coinage of this Shilling was made shortly after the King’s ascension to the English throne (1603), and around the same time (1604-05) he started sponsoring an English version of the Bible. Given the odds, it is very likely that this coin was in circulation during the 5 November of 1605.

He ruled without parliament from 1614 to 1621

James’s Government following the Gunpowder Plot faced financial pressures, due to inflation as well as to profligacy and financial incompetence of the court. The King had dismissed parliament in December 1610 and would again repeat the action in 1614. This time, James I dissolved parliament just after nine weeks when the Commons hesitated to grant him the money he needed to pay off the crown’s debts. Without Parliament, James I managed to raise and save money by employing astute officials such as the businessman Lionel Cranfield. The Monarch also raised cash by selling earldoms and other dignities.

Another of the methods that James I used to raise money for the crown was to arrange a marriage between the Infanta Maria Anna of Spain (daughter of Philip III of Spain) and his son Charles I. The event was named the ‘Spanish Match’ and negotiations took place over the period 1614 to 1623.

During 1621-23 this Gold Laurel was coined and it would have been in circulation during the negotiations with Spain.

During the last years of his reign, the King exercised no power

After his first son Henry died in 1612 Charles became the heir to the throne. Despite having a history of enmity with the Duke of Buckingham, Charles and Buckingham would later reconcile and form an alliance from which the King was excluded. In the last 18 months of his reign, the king effectively exercised no power, and Charles and Buckingham decided most issues. In his last days, James suffered from arthritis, gout, and kidney stones. He also lost his teeth and drank heavily.

The 3rd coinage of this penny would have been in circulation during the last years of James’s reign.

We hope we’ve inspired you to keep on collecting British Coins and would like to take this opportunity to wish you a wonderful Bonfire Night.
