
A complete denomination set of notes issued by the African republic of Malawi. The set comprises 7 values including the 5,10,20,50,100,200 and 500 kwachas. They are dated between 2003 and 2005, Many are new issues with the addition of the value in the watermark. They are all very colourful and the higher values have thick holographic security strips.
All the notes in the set feature a portrait of John Chilembwe, a Western educated Baptist minister (1870-1915) He was an early figure in resisting colonialism in the then Nyasaland. In 1915, with 200 followers, he staged an abortive , largely symbolic uprising against plantation owners where many died, including Chilembwe. The backs of the notes have views of important buildings and scenes from farming and village life.
