The break up of Yugoslavia lead to Bosnia gaining autonomy from other countries in the Yugoslav federation. In March 1992, under EU auspices, 3 communities were established on ethnic lines - Muslims, Croats and Serbs under a central Bosnia authority. This broke up a few weeks later and as we know bitter fighting broke out.
In 1992, the fledgling Muslim Republic of Bosnia Hercogovina needed it’s own banknotes. Until proper issues could be printed, the government took the circulating 500 dinara and 1000 dinara notes from the old Yugoslav Federation and overprinted them with a violet handstamp on the front, showing they were Bosnia issues. They lasted barely four weeks before a ‘proper’ Bosnia Hercogovina was put into circulation. They are truly scarce.
It is only thanks to vigilant bank clerks that any of this early issue has survived for collectors. Several years ago I asked a Bosnia dealer friend if he could locate these notes for me. He came into our store recently with all the notes he had bought from bank clerks over the last 10 years! The numbers he had were really small. Included were examples of the 1000 dinara Provisional issue (P2) They have all obviously seen circulation but, in general, grade Good F- VF . Include this variety while you can. Truly scarce early Bosnia at just £12.50
